Huerfano County was one of the 17 original counties when Colorado became a state in 1876. The word "Huerfano" (War-Fe-No) translated, means "Orphan." It was named after the lone volcanic butte 7 miles north of Walsenburg on I-25.
Walsenburg is named in honor of Fred Walsen, an early pioneer, who opened the first coal mines. Black Diamond refers to coal. The mines are now closed.

Remember, that Chamber of Commerce meetings are held the 1st Thursday of each month except for holidays. Plan to attend and be informed and involved. When everyone gives a little of their time, BIG things can be accomplished!
The Black Diamond Jubilee is scheduled for June 20, 21 & 22 at Fiesta Park at 10th and Russell in Walsenburg. There will be vendors, games, music, entertainment, a beer garden, dances, activities for children, parade & more. For vendor & parade applications, contact the Chamber office at 719-738-1065.
The Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a bowling tournament at the Crown Lanes in Walsenburg for Saturday, June 14th. To participate, you must have a handicap established. If you haven't bowled in a league and need to establish a handicap, go to Crown Lanes to bowl 9 games to get one by May 1st. Proceeds are used to fund Chamber activities in 2008.
